WOODRISE 2021 KYOTO Governance Committee

ChairpersonSeiichi Fukao

Seiichi Fukao

It is our great pleasure as the organizer to hold the event of WOODRISE, an international congress for the development of mid-rise and high-rise wooden buildings, in Kyoto, Japan from October 15 to 17, 2021.

At WOODRISE, industry stakeholders gather to identify design and construction requirements in terms of materials, technologies, and engineering, and to explore the future potential for the development of mid-rise and high-rise wooden buildings. Previously, the congress was held in Bordeaux, France in 2017 and in Quebec, Canada in 2019.

Japan has a long history of constructing wooden buildings, but faces significant challenges in using wood for high-rise buildings and large-scale buildings. It was therefore decided to hold WOODRISE 2021 KYOTO at the Kyoto International Conference Center on the theme of

Wooden Buildings for Sustainable Development
From the Traditional to the Future

The conference will gather extensive information and knowledge about advanced wooden building technologies in different countries and facilitate exchanges among organizations and companies in Japan and other countries.

In this WOODRISE 2021 KYOTO, the plenary sessions will be held on October 16 and in the morning of October 17. In the afternoon of October 16, Kengo Kuma, a world-renowned Japanese architect who is also active overseas, will be invited to deliver a commemorative lecture. This lecture will give participants a valuable opportunity to learn about his ideas and opinions.
We have also prepared programs with rich content, including a technical workshop on mid-rise and high-rise wooden buildings in the afternoon of October 17, a session on promoting the SDGs in the housing and building industry, and a session about the housing market of Asia and Oceania. We hope that you will experience the vitality of the industry that has been spreading to the world.

In holding the event, considering the impact of COVID-19, we will take thorough measures to prevent the spread of infection at the venue and allow participants to choose to participate on-site or on-line. In addition, we provide on-demand streaming of some programs to the participants on our official website for a certain period of time so that they will be able to watch them after the congress.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, we regret to inform you that we have decided to postpone the scheduled social events that would involve food and beverage, such as Welcome Lounge and Gala Dinner, as well as technical tours that would involve traveling in large numbers.
These postponed programs, along with seminars and B to B meetings, will be held at the "WOODRISE 2021 BUSINESS SESSION" scheduled, to be held in Tokyo in May 2022. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for the exchange of opinions and interaction among many industry stakeholders from all over the world, including those who wish to attend the conference in Kyoto in October but are unable to come to Japan. We look forward to your participation.

Up to today, we have established an organizing committee consisting of building and housing organizations related to wooden buildings, etc., and have prepared for the event with the support and cooperation of these related organizations. Starting with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the various governmental and other organizations for their support.

We look forward to sharing quality time with you at WOODRISE in 2021 and seeing you here in Japan in May 2022.
